0 and 2, but a lot more to like

Lot more to like than to not like from last night's pre-season road contest, in which the Birds dropped a 27-23 decision to the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens.

So the BIG dislike?

  • Lost a winnable game. Didn't need to. Yeah, it's the preseason, but these new/young guys need to understand how to FINISH

Liked:

  • O-line much more settled and consistent. In addition to mostly holding the box intact for Matty Ice, the offensive line opened holes for Steven Jackson and Quizz all night
  • Konz was huge and pretty much neutralized the vaunted Haloti Ngata
  • Ryan to Jackson in the slot. Let's see more of that
  • Jeremy Shelly - another "automatic"?
  • Dominique Davis - more consistent, less careless; can see him running the offense if we needed him
  • Paul Worrilow leads in tackles, again
  • Julio!!!!
Wasn't so crazy about:

  • Give me a minute...

Falcons pre-season Game 1 - Bengals 34 Birds 10

What I liked:

  • Both rookie corners. 21 (Trufant) showed me a lot (involved in every play), but Alford showed a lot for a lot longer
  • Paul Worrilow - 12 tackles.Help for Sean W?
  • Dominique Davis - looked good in spots
  • Osi - stopping the run too?
  • Jason Snelling - ol' Reliable
  • Harry Douglas - ol' Reliable II
  • #2 is still in charge!

What I didn't like:

  • Vaunted RB Steven Jackson didn't show much. 5 plays for net 8 yards? And  didn't we bring him in for 3 and 2 situations? He got one tonight and couldn't deliver it!
  • Lamar Homes looked lost; whole right side of the ball looks jacked up
  • Defense line crumbled on goal line stands
  • Big mean presence on defense is still missing...

Battle of the Trenches

Win...and you move on!

Are we for real? Today's the day we find out

From an early December post:

The division race comes down to Atlanta vs Seattle at the Dome, and SF vs NY in SF. Their assessment is that SF ends the Giants' season, while the Falcons prevail and celebrate our first playoff win in the Matt Ryan era against Seattle.

Looks like they called it right. Except of course, for the last step. They also had San Francisco over the Falcons in the NFC Championship game, which would be... today!

Not gonna happen. Today is the day that we prove it.

It's a Wrap - Falcons over Lions 31-18

So that should do it. With the Saturday evening win over the down-but-dangerous Detroit Lions, the Falcons have locked in the #1 seed, finishing their business for the regular season. So next week, we rest our starters against the Bucs in a meaningless game.

Here are the highlights...

Finally: The "D" word

Dominant. There, I said it. Dominant. Hear that? Falcons 34 Giants 0.

Ok, so it took until Game 14 for the Birds to put together an end-to-end total un-flawed performance against any team, let alone the world champs. But dominate they did. Offense. Defense. Special Teams. The whole package. Hallelujah. We knew it was in them. What a pleasure to watch it unfold.

The pass rush that we need

On this Sunday the NY Giants come to town. One of the weapons they bring is a very potent pass rush. Between Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, if the G-men are able to keep Mattie Ice on his ass all day, it will be a long afternoon for the Good Guys.

We need one of those type guys in the ATL. A big, fast, mean pass rusher. Someone who scares QBs to death! Remember the feeling we had when we first heard that Ray Edwards was coming to town? We thought that we might have one there. Oh well...

Trapped!

Finally!  A 2012 Falcons game featuring total dominance from beginning to end! Wait. You mean we were the dominated ones? Against Carolina????

Playoff prediction!!!

The guys on NFLNet this morning introduced a very interesting playoff bracket, based on where teams are today.

Oh when the Saints go marchin' home!

Falcons 23 Saints 13. Birds are 11-1. Any questions?

Home field

Hey, now it's about home field advantage for the play-offs. I'm not even thinking about making the playoffs. We're there.

10 & 1 and Julio & 'Quizz!

OK, count me in. I'm officially on the Jacquizz bandwagon. I think I'm ready for Jacquizz Rodgers to become our leading run option.

D-Block is back in the House...

D-BLOCK is back. Spoon returns to lead the linebacker corps and the defense overall. And not a moment too soon...

#88 again, and again, and again...

Tony G notched his 100th TD reception in last week's loss to the Saints. All the scribes agree he's a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, and it's just my turn to reflect on why that is such a safe bet.

Sideline Hotties? No... Real experts

Yeah, yeah, I know that we said Falcons, more Falcons and only the Falcons... BUT I've been observing something that needs some dialog...
